Canals-Barrera learns calm from playing 'Wizards' mom.

The actress, who plays mom Theresa Russo on Wizards of Waverly Place (8 p.m. ET/PT Friday), credits her Disney series character on giving her that sense of calm. "I've learned to relax a little bit more because of the way Theresa is," says Canals-Barrera. But don't mistake rolling with the punches with staying low-key. Canals-Barrera, 44, is the first to describe her character as "Crazy. The good crazy. She's fun. She's protective. She's passionate. She goes with the flow when she has to and she's flexible." After all, Canals-Barrera plays the matriarch in a family of three wizards-in-training portrayed by Selena Gomez (Alex), David Henrie (Justin) and Jake T. Austin (Max). Actor David DeLuise plays their dad, Jerry. When Wizards started, Canals-Barrera thought it might do well. "I had actually done a pilot already with Disney where I played Selena's mom and that pilot did not get picked up. And then they brought us back for Wizards. And then this one was a great feeling from the get-go and obviously it's been a tremendous blessing because so many people love it." The show, which is in Season 4, has won an Emmy for outstanding children's program. The actress does appreciate the show's success. "I forget that the show is enormously popular and that parents see it because their kids see it so a lot of grownups see it too which I really do like." While Wizards keeps her busy, Canals-Barrera isn't afraid to take on more projects. Fans will see her in the Tom Hanks-directed big-screen drama-comedy Larry Crowne, out July 1. Hanks also plays the title character. "I play Lala Pinedo. I'm a fellow student to Larry in the community college that he attends. I'm in a few of his classes," Canals-Barrera says. "My character is shy and scared of public speaking and our speech teacher is Julia Roberts, and by the end of the movie, I come out of my shell." As for Hanks's Larry, "He's of course an incredibly charismatic interesting quirky character — all those wonderful characters that Tom plays," says the actress. "He changes our lives. and we change his life." And what was it like to work for the director? "Oh my gosh, it was every actor's dream. Just to even work with him as an actor would have been amazing. To see him in action as the director and I don't know if you know that he's also the co-writer. He co-wrote the script with Nia Vardalos. That was really exciting. To be in scenes with him and to have him direct me was thrilling. He was so funny on set all the time." And did Canals-Barrera get to spend a lot of time with Roberts? "Yeah, that was what was really interesting about this project is that a lot of us played students so we're in the classroom, and we get to watch a lot of the directing of other actors (including Roberts) by Tom," she says. "It was really surreal to be in a classroom setting and really experiencing a master class in acting. That's what we would say each other. We would be like 'You know what? We're in a Tom Hanks movie, and we're watching him direct Julia Roberts, of all people, and us.' It was just wonderful to be part of this incredible ensemble. There are a lot of wonderful, interesting, different actors in this big cast." Canals-Barrera has always wanted to be a performer. And she isn't the only one in her family. "My husband and I are both actors," the TV mom says. She and David Barrera will be celebrating 12 years together this year. Their daughters Bridget, 7, and Madeleine, 5, have "grown up seeing this as just part of our lives. Mommy and Daddy are on TV. Mommy and Daddy went to auditions. It's like no big deal for them to be in the school show." But still, she plans to keep the girls' options open. "I encourage everything that is positive that they have an interest in. I'm not singling any one thing out. I want them to do what they really want to do," Canals-Barrera explains. She's just ready to roll with the punches. After all, says Canals-Barrera, "I want them to do what makes them happy."
